le Petite Atelier
Before anything becomes a finished August Ellery object, it starts and ends in our atelier.
Sounds fancy, but this is the practical room of the "house" that is where you work with the aspiration to create something beautiful. It's your comfy sweatpants with a cashmere sweater.
Here, we test paper. Score boxes by hand when we make dies. Compare the designs for our fabric. Change our minds about colors. Laugh at ourselves. Print something too small, then too large, then almost right. We make a stack, move one thing out, bring another thing in, and wait for the group to begin to speak the same language.
Right now, much of that work is circling around our first limited release.
We are imagining it as a small seasonal box: a gathered edition of fabrics, creative materials, printed pieces, and tactile objects chosen around a particular mood, palette, and story. Not a random assortment. Not a promotional bundle. More like a small studio parcel — the kind of thing that gives you something to open, something to use, something to be inspired by, something to delight and something to begin.
The first ingredients are simple ones: cloth, paper, color, tools, packaging, and creating a moment for permission to live an unhurried life.
That is what The Atelier will be for here: notes from the making side of August Ellery. The tests, the materials, the prototypes, the boxes, the small decisions, the things that worked, the things that nearly worked, and the things that may need one more cup of tea (or gin...sorry, not sorry) before they reveal themselves.
We’ll show what is being prepared as it takes shape.
For now: fabric is on the table, orders are being processed, the first box is being imagined, and the atelier is open.
